Areas of Expertise
Christian is a patent advisor with extensive experience in IP consulting and management, as well as IPR administration with a focus on patents. He works on identifying needs and opportunities for protection and drafts and handles patent applications in Norway and internationally.
Christian is authorized to handle cases before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He is also a European Patent Attorney, a US Attorney at Law, and a licensed lawyer in Norway.
Christian has experience in a wide range of technical fields, including marine systems, offshore wind turbines, LNG, hydrodynamics, energy and environmental physics, petroleum technology, subsea systems, and marine biology. In recent years, he has focused on drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to chemistry, oil and gas, and marine biology/fisheries. He is actively involved in license negotiations and drafting for his clients and provides advice and guidance on the utilization of IP in innovation and in product and service development.
Christian’s clients range from large multinational corporations to SMEs and smaller entrepreneurs. He can thus tailor his services to meet different needs and circumstances.
His areas of specialization include oil and gas, renewable energy and the environment, shipping and maritime industries, aquaculture and fisheries, construction, and mechanical engineering.
Christian analyzes and assesses competitor patents and evaluates their validity and scope. He is also experienced in challenging third-party rights through oppositions and protests. He assesses the risk of infringement and advises on patent enforcement, and defends clients' rights in oral proceedings before the EPO and the Norwegian Board of Appeal for Industrial Property Rights (KFIR). Christian also has experience in litigation as a lay judge and expert witness and has previously worked as a litigation specialist.
Christian Abel has also had the pleasure of being a guest lecturer in IP at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) in Bergen.
